Town hall meeting with Sen. Coburn
U.S. Senator Tom Coburn is holding a town hall meeting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 at Tealridge Retirement Community located at 2100 NE 140th (North of Memorial on Eastern/Boulevard) in Edmond. The event is free and open to the public. Dr. Coburn will speak for a few minutes and spend about an hour taking questions from the audience.

ACCRA 2008 First Quarter Cost of Living ranks below national average
Edmond’s first quarter cost of living index ranks 11.4 percent below the national average according to the latest ACCRA Cost of Living Index by C2ER, the council for community and economic research. With a first quarter 2008 index of 88.6, Edmond’s cost of living dropped 2 percent from the same period in 2007. Edmond ranked below the national average in all six categories: grocery items (87.6), housing (77.8), utilities (92.6), transportation (97.6), health care (95.7) and miscellaneous goods (93.7). XetaComp receives second ONAP award
A two-year $344,800 grant has been awarded to XetaComp Nanotechnology LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Edmond-based NanoBioMagnetics Inc. through the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Program. The program is administered by the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology. Voters OK 3 out of 5 bond issues
Oklahoma County voters favored three of five balloted measures in the May 13 election. More than 40,000 registered voters cast their ballots. The $55 million bond to purchase the former 3.8 million-square-foot General Motors plant for Tinker Air Force base was approved. The facility will be called the Tinker Aerospace Complex. In addition, the $6 million natural hazard mitigation and flood relief bond passed as well as the $10.5 million Oklahoma County Courthouse Renovation bond. Courtesy of OKCBusiness, May 14, 2008.

AAA to add 1200 jobs

States unemployment rate drops
The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission announced the state’s unemployment dropped to 2.9 percent in April, which is a 0.3 percent decrease from March’s figures and 1 percent lower than April 2007. The U.S. unemployment rate is 4.8 percent which represents a 0.4 percent decrease from March’s 5.2 percent. Courtesy of OKCBusiness News, May 19, 2008.

Edmond elementary schools recognized
Four Edmond elementary schools have been recognized by the Oklahoma State Department of Education for outstanding academic performance for testing done in the 2006-07 school year. Clegern, West Field, Cross Timbers and Russell Dougherty elementary schools all received the Oklahoma Academic Achievement Award, created by House Bill 1593. Thai restaurant opens downtown
A new Thai food restaurant, Siam Smile, located at 108 S. Broadway in downtown Edmond is now open. Nanthana Sorathorn, restaurant manager, was named the fastest Thai cook in San Francisco.
