UCO continues excellence, funding needed
Many in Edmond and central Oklahoma have known for quite some time that the University of Central Oklahoma is a bargain both educationally and to the state of Oklahoma. UCO has provided a top-notch educational experience to thousands each year at a fraction of the cost of other four-year higher education institutions. New figures released by the university reveal just how great a bargain the state is getting from UCO. University of Central Oklahoma students are funded at only $3,780 per student compared to other regional four-year institutions at $4,242. SW Bell receives approval to offer long-distance service to Oklahomans
SBC Communications, the parent company of Southwestern Bell, has received Federal Communications Commission approval to offer long-distance service to customers in Oklahoma. The FCC approval is effective March 7. "This is a wonderful victory for Oklahoma. Consumers are the big winners because they will now have more choices and lower prices. This action extends benefits of increased telecommunication competition to Oklahoma consumers," said Jim Epperson, president, Southwestern Bell-Oklahoma. Retail sales up over last year
Business barometer data released by the Edmond Economic Development Authority for last month shows an increase in city taxable retail sales of 3 ˝ percent, compared to the same month a year ago. Snyders IGA garners retailer award
Snyders IGA is one of the winners of the 2001 IGA International Retailer of the Year award. The award is given to only eight stores, of the more than 5,000 IGA stores in the world, said store manager Jim Mills. “We wish to thank all our valued employees and management team for making this tremendous achievement possible,” Mills said. Lowe’s site approved by City Council
The recently approved Lowe's will be toward the back portion of the shopping center site along Bryant Avenue and adjacent to a proposed Super Target. Other businesses planned for the site include an International House of Pancakes, Walgreens and McDonalds. The property is under development by Sooner Investments. Guaranteed Quotes a new Edmond-based online underwriting company had a booming first month. Owner-operator David M. Chaney started the online company so consumers could save money and make it easier to purchase life insurance all by the touch of a button. A company named for the opposite meaning of computer jargon “downtime” is virtually unknown locally, not so for surrounding states. Doll House honored
The Doll House of Edmond has been named one of the top ten dealers for 2000 at the American International Toy Fair recently in New York City. “We are delighted that The Doll House made the top ten,” said Lawton Doll Company president Wendy Lawton. “They exemplify all that is best in a retailer. In an age of chain stores and mega-malls, this shop is a breath of fresh air.”
Nine other retailers honored in the Top Ten ranged from the Gottschalks Department Stores of California to doll shops in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and other states. UCO receives funds for new scholarships
The National Science Foundation has chosen The University of Central Oklahoma to receive 15 new scholarships over a two-year period of time for students studying computer science, engineering and mathematics. OC offers new degree in computer engineering
The College of Science and Engineering at Oklahoma Christian University has added a new degree program in computer engineering that university officials say is a direct response to the expressed needs of industry and students. With the move, Oklahoma Christian now offers students a third degree choice to the engineering degree programs in mechanical and electrical engineering already in place.
